If you’re headed to Sri Lanka, no trip is complete without a visit to Unawatuna. This small town is in the section of Galle on the southwestern coastline. How to get to Unawatuna
There are a few ways to reach Unawatuna other than renting a car at the airport. The easiest being a taxi service, which would take about 2 hours from Colombo Airport. If you’d like to stick with public transport, there is a train that goes to Unawatuna. It starts from Colombo Fort Station and you’ll have to get to the station via taxi, local bus, or rickshaw. It will take 4 hours to reach Unawatuna. If you want to take a bus all the way instead of train it will take about 5 hours and you can catch a shuttle from the airport to the main bus station. You might have to switch buses in Galle to get to Unawatuna—the final destination.

Where to stay in Unawatuna
One of the most popular options is Hotels in Unawatuna which is overlooking the Jungle Beach (the best beach in the area) which is directly on the beach, has an infinity pool, and surf right outside. You can’t go wrong with either of these. If you want something on the budget end, there are plenty of options (too many to list) and you can even show up and find a guesthouse once you are there. Many locals rent out rooms in their houses as well. If you want something a bit boutique, the Frangipani Tree is a popular boutique option.

What to do in Unawatuna
The top 3 tourist attractions are The Japanese Peace Pagoda, Jungle Beach, and Unawatuna Beach. These are places you literally cannot miss seeing while in Unawatuna, because it is so small that you will see them on accident even if you don’t try! Almost all snorkel tours take you to Jungle Beach, and you pass by the Pagoda on the way. It’s very easy to do a lot without short duration in Unawatuna.
